For several years before we moved, we had been thinking about moving from our house to a condo. A couple times in the past, we came close to signing an agreement to purchase. But after we acquired our place in the country and after Mira retired, we began to look seriously at moving out of our house. We saw a large number of new and used condos. From our perspective, most had problems that we were not in a position to solve. Then we went to see Suite 610 at 25 Maitland. At first we didn't recognize the potential - the previous owners used the space in the wrong way (for our purposes). Our search continued. Within a few days, however, we began to think that Suite 610 might be ideal, at least for our purposes. We paid a return visit and decided this could be our new home. All in, it only took a few months from our decision, to the sale of our house, to moving in. The location is in the middle of downtown Toronto. We're a two minute walk to the Wellesley subway station, but the street has a residential feel. We're just off Yonge Street. It's the longest street in the world (according to most observers), running some 1,900 km from Lake Ontario to Rainy River in northern Ontario (at the Minnesota border). Maitland is a ten minute walk south of Bloor and a ten minute walk north of the Eaton Centre. This detailed map shows how central we are to the important places in downtown Toronto (the red dot locates our condo). This larger scale map places us within greater Toronto. We're a block away from Church and Wellesley. This puts us just on the edge of Canada's largest gay and lesbian community. One of the fringe benefits is that we have something like 50 restaurants located within two blocks and a gaggle of 24 hour "supermarkets" within easy walking distance. One of the "dangers" we have recognized is that the temptation to eat out is very strong. It can be interesting, ... but expensive and fattening. Our plan is to take our time, but to sample all of the 50 restaurants that seem to be "reasonable". The building was registered in November, 1987. It was developed by Bramalea, has 18 floors and 168 units. The roof has a running track, swimming pool, fireside lounge, whirlpool, saunas, and exercise room. The main floor has a party room, billiards room, "library", guest suite, 24 hour concierge, mail boxes, and newspaper room. Given the downtown location, it has only 116 residential parking spaces, but does have 10 visitor's parking spaces (first-come-first-served), and 45 bicycle parking spaces. Our suite is one of the larger units in the building, with 1222 square feet. Mira has "her" room, .. that we also use to watch television. I have an office that was planned to be a "solarium/den", but which works fine as an office. The unit has two bathrooms, one of which has both a soaker tub and a tiled shower. At first, we didn't see the point of such a large bathroom, but its attractiveness increases with use. Attentive readers should note that the building has two guest suites. We're looking forward to seeing friends who want to visit, or those who want a convenient downtown base. Give us a call, or send an email. We would enjoy seeing you in our city location. Mira & Bob Fabian |
